  • In-Home Business: If you operate a business out of your home, your current homeowners policy will not likely provide you with adequate coverage. Contact your agent for an 'in-home business' quote.
  • Outbuildings: Homeowners policies provide an extension of coverage to cover your outbuildings on premises that are not used for business or farm. This extension is usually equal to 10% of the value of your home. However, if a building is used for any business purpose, you will likely need separate coverage for proper protection.
  • Rental cars: Taking a vacation this year and renting a car? There are several reasons why you may want to consider purchasing insurance coverage from the rental agency for your rental vehicle. Give us a call at 847-3300.
  • Trampolines: As trampolines have become more common, so have injuries sustained while using one. In fact, many companies are refusing to write a homeowners policy if a trampoline exists. Other companies may accept them on the same basis as a swimming pool in that they need to be fenced in or protected in some manner.
  • Jewelry/Guns/Silverware: Homeowners policies have theft limitations built into them for theft of items such as jewelry, guns, silverware, etc. Take your own personal inventory of these items. You may want to insure them separately for better coverage.
  • Vicious Dogs: Liability resulting from dog bites is becoming another issue of concern for insurance companies. Many people lose their lives each year from being attacked by dogs. If you choose to own a breed of dog that has vicious tendencies, you may find it more and more difficult to purchase a homeowners policy.
  • Watercraft: If you own a boat/motor, don't forget you may need to contact your agent for proper coverage. Please don't assume that your homeowners will cover a loss resulting from the use of a boat and motor.
  • Auto Loan Coverage: Sometimes in order to afford a new vehicle, loans up to 60-72 months are necessary to reduce those payments. Here's a word of caution. Unless you purchase 'auto loan/lease coverage' you could find yourself owing the financial institution additional money after a settlement of a total loss. Why? By spreading out the payments, you are not able to reduce the principal balance to keep pace with depreciation. This coverage helps fill that gap but is only available on brand new cars and may not be offered by all companies.
  • Balance of Coverage: We all know that personal liability due to negligence can, potentially, amount to a lot of money. No one knows how much coverage is enough but you might want to consider increasing your limits for better protection. Sometimes, increasing your deductibles can help offset for any increases in cost for higher liability limits. Better yet, contact us about a personal umbrella policy which can give you additional liability protection, starting at limits of $1,000,000.
  • Water/Sewer Back-Up: Damage to your home due to back-up sewer and water is not a standard coverage under a homeowners policy. However, you can purchase coverage for this peril as an endorsement to your homeowners. The annual cost is very reasonable.
  • Rental Reimbursement: If your automobile becomes disabled due to an insured peril (i.e. collision, vandalism, etc.) you may need to temporarily rent a car to get back and forth to work, run errands, etc. In most instances, you have to purchase this added protection separately. Let us know if you are interested in finding out more.
